GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Telecom Technician II for the Emergency Communications Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position maintains emergency communications systems in and around WYDOT Headquarters, including radio communication, telephone, data wiring, and roadside communications, essential to the mission of law enforcement public safety entities and to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. Cheyenne is also home to the "Daddy of 'em All" – Cheyenne Frontier Days – held the last week of July. Wyoming is one of only nine states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Repairs and maintains complex electronic equipment.

  • Diagnose and maintain hardware and software.

  • Performs preventive maintenance, emergency repair and troubleshooting, modifications, utility locates, operation, software maintenance and oversees initial operations.

  • Inspect, diagnose, document, and repair roadside devices.

  • Assist the Lead Site manager in maintaining and upgrading the current WYDOT network hardware.

  • Maintains the State of Wyoming’s public safety communication system, WyoLink and other public messaging systems.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to applicants who have FCC General Radio Operator's License and Tower Climbing Safety and Rescue Certification.

**Valid Driver's License is required

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic hand tool use and knowledge.

  • Ability to read and use a digital multi-meter.

  • Ability to perform the job in a safe manner.

  • Proper training in basic first-aid and CPR.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Technical Operations Technician I

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Some agencies may require valid Class C driver's license

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Technical Operations) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Technical Operations Technician I

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Some agencies may require valid Class C driver's license

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work in extreme weather and involve heavy lifting.

  • Works at heights of 200 feet and under.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt

  • **Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus

  • Temporary employees accepting a full time permanent position.

  • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.

  • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.

  • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12 month period.

  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
